Afterlife?

Postby ryanrab1 on Tue Dec 23, 2008 7:18 am

As I've stated before on these forums I'm an atheist.

So of course I don't believe in an afterlife, but recently I came upon a topic in the general discussion section of gametrailers.com where somebody said:

I feel bad for the people who don't beleive in an afterlife. I'm not the type person who beleives in "BURNING IN HELL!!!", but I can't imagine how much life would feel. Not beleive in an after life means theres nothing more, it hurts the mind thinking about it becuase our minds can't comprehend it. And it makes your life just that much more harder.

Unfortunately, that thread was closed.

So to respond to that quote and to all people that believe in an afterlife I made this thread on gametrailers and here to see what the people of ODO believed.

Now, to start, let's look at when you're born. Before your parents did the old in and out where and what were you? Nothing, you were non-existent.

If you, as a living being were not alive for the six billion years that the earth has been here; will it not be the same when you die? Is it that hard to think that you will be nothing?

Also, why is the Christian God so self-centered that only if you praise and worship him you will get to his super special awesome tree house of fun (I'm talking about the mythical heaven).

Think about it, Christians go to church for about an hour a week, and then when you group together all of the pray and meditation, that's a lot of time off of a person's life.

Would a creator be such a selfish prick, that he wouldn't let you get to his so called "paradise" if you didn't follow his beliefs?

Wow, what a great guy.

Religions always been a touchy subject (especially so on online forums it seems).

I'm an atheist too so I don't believe in the afterlife, and I think the opposite to the quote above. Knowing that there's nothing after when I die just makes me want to enjoy life more now.

That's a great way to think of it, actually.

Well, that's me. The optimist. Sometimes stupidly optimistic. :P

Whenever religion is brought into discussion, I always think about the meaning of life, which is indeed 42.

All kidding aside, I find that the entire concept of "afterlife" is nigh-impossible to comprehend because if afterlife exists, then the people who die have no way of contacting the living.

I'm no hardcore Christian; heck, I only go to church a few times a year, swear constantly when angered, and almost never pray for forgiveness. I guess you can say I only go to church because my family does.

I guess I'm stuck in the "wait and see" category. Religion isn't straight up solid facts, it's just a belief, but it's had an increasing influence on the world. Whether that influence is negative or positive is heavily debatable.
The Goose shall speak once more.

True true. The problem with religion is the fact that the bible (and the Toran etc.) are written by people. Which means the facts can be (and probably are) wrong. Like the book of Genesis in the bible, how the hell did they figure that out? And where are the dinosaurs?!
