Just speculation right now but look at this:

I doubt it'd looks like that but it's a good mock-up nonetheless.

I would love it if it looked like that, the whole "speaker all around the top screen" thing looks way cool, and it would be really awesome if the DS 2 was about half as thick as the DS...probably out of reach considering all that needs to go into it, but that would be so cool...

Being thinner would be a bonus. I agree that it does look good but if it runs off the normal cartridges that the DS uses now (like the picture shows) than what about the wide-screen up top? Is it just going to be letter-boxed for old games and only widescreen for new games?

The cartridge it shows is different, there isn't a chopped off corner on the normal DS games...and the mario kart game doesn't look like that either see:

Well, that's a good point. Can't argue with that. That is assuming Nintendo stick with cartridges for their next portable. Which I'm pretty sure they will, but you never know.

There's no reason to switch to mini-discs or UMD at this point. The game cards can hold tonnes of data, and handheld disc media is either too slow or unreliable. I'm seeing game cards coming back again for sure.

I doubt it, but, I would love for Nintendo to make a portable device with a good size hard drive, maybe 32 gigs, and make a store like the apple app store, where you could buy all of the games from your DS.

Or, somehow use the Wii to buy your games, and transfer them to your DS.

I somehow doubt that the next DS would have more memory than the Wii. Oh well, it could happen, I suppose. Not likely, though.

I know...

But, in ten years this is where the industry will be.

I don't doubt that. The future is going to be insane.

Actually that could work... Imagine if the next handheld just had a lot of storage space and you could use a credit card or points card to walk close to any download station (or use your Wii) to download games. That would be pretty awesome.

Maybe that is what Nintendo hopes to achieve with the holographic storage solution, but that looks like a Iphone and a DS crossed together . I would buy. And digital download is the way to go. Not just for download exclusive games, but for all games, a service like Steam.

My hopes for the DS 2:

-SD Card compatability
-2 screen touch
-Better voice recognition(or at least some games that use it)
-Virtual console channel for downloading previous handheld games
-Improved PictoChat(Saveable conversations/animations, wifi(so if you have a modem you can chat with someone farther away))
-Screenshot button(Saves to default memory or SD Card)
-DS Message System(Think Wii message system, but for DS...this is different from the IM I mentioned earlier because with the message system the receiving person doesn't have to be online to send a message)

There we go, that's my vision.

-SD Card compatability would be nice.
-Better voice recognition would work well in a lot of games
-VC idea sounds brilliant (Super Mario World on the go!)
-Pictochat is a bit bare-bones in the DS, and I don't see many people using it much. Although making it wifi would help
-Screenshots could be interesting
-A message system would be good. So it's all connected, you can message to the Wii and PCs etc.

I would like a better console-to-handheld connectivity. If it's the Wii, imagine being able to download a Mario Kart track from the Wii and playing it on the DS 2 simultaneously. So you could have 4 players on the Wii, while a few more are playing on the DS'. This could work in so many games (Mario Party, Brawl????!!!)

That's probably one of my favourite mock-ups. With Nintendo going through their Apple phase, it's hard to see why they wouldn't make these design choices.

I think they should make it at least backwards-compatible with the DS. Since the DS has such an extensive library of games already, it would make it easier to move over to the new handheld.

Oh ya, I would go insane and rip out all my hair if they didn't make it backwards compatible.

It wouldn't really make any sense not to have it backwards-compatible. Not only will they be able to keep the DS' library active, it'd be so much easier for owners of the DS to move onto the DS 2. Especially if they have a few favourite games on the DS already.
