My thoughts on the DSi revamp

Postby PsychoDuck on Tue Oct 27, 2009 5:37 am

"It was announced earlier today, quite out of nowhere, that there will be yet another DSi model released by the end of this year. Reading the details, I was, at first, feeling a little cheated. I'd just bought my DSi in April, and here they are announcing another one with far bigger screens retailing for the exact same price. I'd be holding my DSi-Mini while other people are walking about with their Mega-DSi systems and enjoying the extra 0.75" of screen (It doesn't sound like much, but it really is). Seems unfair to the millions of DSi owners out there, doesn't it?"

Again, I apologize for the gap in updating just there. There've been a few changes going on around here. I won't bore you with the details. Just know that things should be back to the way they should be now, and that the blog will update more normally.

When I read about the announcement yesterday, I put a ruler up to my DS and noticed that that's a pretty huge difference. I think the resolution for pictures is what's going to suffer the most. I predict pixels the size of tumors, just like the good ol' days.

Ah, the good ol' days... When handhelds were the size of bricks with games the size of a packet of crackers...

Not to mention the funny colours the screens were, they were never black or white. It had to be green and a slightly darker green. Or, god forbid, red and black.

But it seems like a strange decision to release a new DS model so quickly, the DSi hasn't been out for long. I guess you're explanation makes sense, and that's the only real way I can make heads or tails of it. Nintendo have to be targeting another audience with this thing.

I welcome the bigger screens, even with the size-resolution issue (it is a valid one). I don't play on my portable consoles much, mainly since I like playing in the more relaxed environment of my house/room (before Chrono Trigger, the last portable game I had played was TWEWY; and I couldn't tell you when the last time I played my PSP was); and since I enjoy more story driven RPGs, it's easier to "get into" them when not surrounded by people/sounds/noise.

For all the Chrono Trigger I've played last week (almost 30 hours), larger screens would have been amazing.

I enjoy playing on the consoles too, it just seems more relaxed and more immersive to me. I haven't played my DS in a while.
