New Play Control: Rip-off or good deal?

Postby Psychogoose on Mon Jan 26, 2009 5:15 am

I've been reading an article on GoNintendo regarding the New Play Control series, and it got me thinking: are the games really worth it?

Personally, I think most of the games are a good deal. I've been browsing E-Bay and found that the only games that are substantially cheaper than their up-coming Wii counterparts are Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Chibi Robo and Pikmin 2 are expensive as hell, while Power Tennis, Jungle Beat, and the first Pikmin are near the $30 mark.

I think I'll most likely be getting the two Pikmin games. I never owned those games back then, and the positive reception of the controls and the added wide screen always helps. I'm still debating whether or not to get the Prime games, because I could probably find both at EB Games for under $30. On the other hand, the Wii versions will have the same amazing controls as Prime 3, and it's convenient to have the entire trilogy on the same format.

That being said, I think it's a good way to bring attention to some of Nintendo's lesser-known franchises, and I hope that there will ground-up sequels for a lot of these games. I still, however, don't understand why Power Tennis gets a remake. ANY Mario game is automatically a million-seller because of the title, so this port seems unnecessary. Hopefully there is a new Mario tennis game in the works, with motion-plus, online play, mii-integration, and new characters.

Total Rip off!

They should have charged $19.99 not $29.99.

Would you believe Mario Tennis is topping the charts in Japan (or something like that).

I think it's a good idea overall for people who haven't played the games before. But it is still a bit too expensive even with all the new features. Bear in mind we're basically paying for games that are essentially 7/8 years old.

From a business perspective, it's a great move by Nintendo to squeeze a bit more out of those franchises that didn't really have a good shot at the market through the GameCube. It also provides a larger install base if (or when) a sequel hits.
If these games do well, there's a better chance of a sequel too.

I would only really be complaining if they were $50, unless the first 2 Prime games were bundled together for that price. It's still way better than paying $20 dollars for those NES ports on the GBA.

By the way, is it really true that the retailers, not Nintendo, are the ones who came up with the $30 price tag?

I'd say good for those who haven't played... I'm really looking forward to playing the GC Metroid Prime games, personally... I have my brother's GC MP games on my shelf, but never got around to playing them.

Really? Makes me extra happy I grabbed it for $10 new at Gamestop a long time ago. It's a wonderful little game.

I got it for $60 (Canadian) back when it was new. BEFORE IT WAS COOL. I'm a trend-setter, baby.

I was in a Game-Stop and I found the first Prime for 15 bucks marked down to $10. The I got up to the till and it turns out it was only $5. I was seriously waiting for the guy to shout "You got Punked!" any second.

Haha, I love it when that happens. It drops even more from it's marked price and inside your head you just hear: "HELLZ YES." Most of the time I have to refrain from fist-pumping and high-fiving everyone around me. I almost always end up doing it though.

The other customers tend to avoid me now...

I haven't actually tried it out, and I think it's expensive on Ebay because it's rare. I find that rarer games tend to be pricier (MGS Twin Snakes, Conker's Bad Fur Day).

My brother has Park Patrol. It's probably the strangest game I've ever played, but it has a neat concept.
