Penny Arcade raises a valid point against the PS3

Postby PsychoDuck on Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:54 pm

Those guys at Penny Arcade are geniuses. And they always tell it like it is, too. Check out this comic talking about having to "install" Devil May Cry on your PS3 (A process which takes over 20 minutes):

This is a really great point. Sure, installing a game once is no big deal. Thing is, we shouldn't have to do it all. When was the last time you installed a game on anything that wasn't a cell phone or a computer? Chances are, you haven't done anything like this ever. And you never should in the future, either.

It's total bullcrap that one should ever have to install a game on any game console EVER. This is just Sony covering the fact that Blu-Ray discs have incredibly crappy streaming speeds. Cover up one inconvenience with another. Yeah, that'll go over well.

So basically, if you have a PS3 and a 360, get DMC for the latter. So you can actually play it, not watch a progress bar fill up over a twenty minute period.

That's one of the main reasons I play console games.

What I've found: Downloading and installing on computers SUCK.

Supposedly, you get significantly faster loading times on the ps3 w/install than the 360, but yeah... I'd rather just stick the game in an play it. It's one of the major pros to console vs pc gaming: you just stick the game in and play it. No time spent installing, no hard drive space dedicated to a single game.

Exactly. With consoles it's always stick it in and play. No bull crap about installation. The most there should be is the occasional mandatory firmware upgrade like with many major Wii games.

Hmm, yea.. but if the installation is not required and drastically decreases loading times... is this really a bad thing?! I see what you mean but it is not exactly compulsory as far as I have heard, which means it is fine to do either. Install=better loading times so I'd probably install...
Always remember that you are unique. Just like everybody else.

But it's a pain in the ass to do it. Installation should never have any place in console gaming.

Next, Sony says they want PS3 to be like iPod. One friggen huge iPod.

Just like Nintendo said about vc-games, but without making any sense. You should never need to install games for consoles. That's why they are fun, no need to worry about anything, just put it in and play.

Duck, the reason you install it on the PS3 is so you have faster loading times. I don't think you need to install it (don't quote me on that). If you compare the 360 game (you can't install at all) to the PS3 game, the PS3 game has much better loading times, and looks a little better.

Duck, it's not Sony that put the installation into the game. It is who ever made the game. So don't blame the PS3 for something a 3rd Party developer did. Probably if Capcom would have given the people making the game more time, we would not be talking about this right now.

I'm not saying Sony put it there. I know it was Capcom that made the game. But the only reason Capcom put the installation in the game is because of the Blu-Ray being incredibly slooooooooooooow.

At least it's only a one-time installation. But still, does it seriously have to be 20 minutes...

Someone will have to do a comparison on load times between the 360 and PS3 versions.

Maybe GT will do something like that. They tend to like doing comparisons.

Penny Arcade has played both versions of the games. Here's what they had to say:

"I now own both versions of Devil May Cry 4, and I can tell you that the benefits of the twenty-one minute install are completely irrelevant. I spent over a hundred and twenty dollars to learn this bit of trivia. I love to hear talk online about load times which are "twice as fast" on the Playstation 3. It's very easy to double a small number. If you have two cents, and then you find two more, that doesn't make you a rich man. The reality is that the loads are pretty slick on both platforms, and even spooled from the hard disc the loads are by no means instantaneous. The whole experience has been quite odd. The advantage of the local cache in this case is entirely dismissible, which makes me wonder why they subjected users to it. There's no option to play the game without an install, which I think is telling."

Bullcrap, anyone?

Now that I think about it, 1UP did a comparison before. Turns out the the PS3 loaded about 1 - 2 seconds faster. And the installation is compulsory?!
