Twilight Princess or Windwaker?

Postby Psychogoose on Sat Jul 26, 2008 7:03 pm

I've hardly played Windwaker enough to form an opinion on it, so I'll let all of you who've played both games in depth have at it.

TP, most definitely.
I liked the graphics way better, and they had some really neat game play elements too. WW was maybe a little bit more cheery, but even so, I didn't like all the sailing you had to do...

Frankly, I prefer the more realistic graphics of TP. Not to say I hate the art direction of WW; it just doesn't suit my tastes if you know what I mean.

I didn't really like messing with the sailing either (so I was relieved with PH where you can just draw where to go). In all honesty I haven't even finished WW since I was playing my friend's game (I never owned a GC :P); but I got pretty far when I was at his house.

I liked the art style from Windwaker better simply because it doesn't look very dated even today. When I started playing Link's Crossbow training a year after Twilight Princess, I already started to notice the visuals were starting to age. Textures were sorta muddy and the NPCs lacked emotion, something I enjoyed during the short time I played Windwaker. Non-realistic art styles also don't need to be in HD to look great, something proven with the Paper Mario series and Okami. Most of the Wii's best-looking titles boast cel-shading, hand-drawn 2D, ect. This really helps hide the system's technical shortcomings in contrast to the other two systems while still allowing the games to age well in comparison to their then-photorealistic counterparts.

As for overall gameplay, I can't have an opinion, but TP's combat system and overall darker tone makes it one of my favourite games in the series. I really do want to get a chance to play Windwaker again, especially during the summer when there's not many games releasing.

Maybe the next Zelda game could be a combination of Windwaker and TP's art styles. A darker, grittier game, yet cel-shaded (but not so cartoony) at the same time would be the best of both worlds.

As much as I liked Wind Waker, the Tri-Force hunting kinda ruined the game... it just reeeeeally dragged it down. I loved that it felt like an adventure, though.

But after the Water Temple/level, Twilight Princess tended to drag a bit as well... overall, it did feel nice and epic despite it's overall lack of difficulty (and some weapons, like the double Claw Shot, were just plain fun).

(Wind Waker did have a dungeon (the Wind one? I remember having to carry around a bird person) which I found just plain annoying.)

Wind Waker had a fantastic finish; a bit more satisfying than Twilight Princess's from what I recall.

Twilight Princess had Midna, who is one of my favorite video game characters.

Overall, I give the nod to TP. I love WW's more 'adventurous' atmostphere, but Midna was just too compelling.

WW, the art style is genius, and it looks much better that TP now. It was cheery, and difficult, and it was chock full of things to do. I haven't played it in a while, but next time (when I beat MP3), I will get 100%.
TP was not as long, and was easier. The stories each had their twists and turns, and the WW ending was better, but they were equal in story. Midna was the better side character, and I loved that Epona was back, but the music was superior in WW, which why I chose it.

Maybe if Nintendo decide to use cell-shading in a more realistic way. Sort of like how the new Prince of Persia is looking. I think it would look awesome.

After playing Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on my wide screen EDTV (I don't need an HD TV for a Wii... lol) I have to say that WW looks better, less dated, and is more cheery, but with a gritty storyline. I've started playing WW again, and some gameplay mechanics I really liked, like the sidl...ing? against a wall, and crouching to sneak up to the piggies and some enemies makes it more fun, and the music for sailing is grandiose. There is more expression, and the melancholy of it all makes it my favorite Zelda game. Ocarina of time loses that spot, because of the (unfinished) water temple. And the deku leaf was fun.

Wow, that was long.

BUMP

I've always wanted to do that. But this is an argument that cannot stay like this. It must be decided on once and for all.

Well TP is winning 3 to 2. Not really decisive but that's that. Unless someone else votes, it's going to stay that way.

I'd be happy to see more people vote. This pole is open to all sorts of opinions.

BTW, just started playing Link's Crossbow Training again. I never realized just how dated it looked. I'm wondering if the visuals are dumbed down from Twilight Princess. I still can't directly compare since I still don't have a new TP disc. They are still too expensive, whether used or new.

Oh wow, looks like WW just got the flip on TP. It's now 4 to 3.

Now that I think about it, Crossbow Training's graphics do look a bit on the meh side. Link looks alright, but the enemies and such could need some sprucing up.

Since Nintendo's announced that they're porting Gamecube games to the Wii with new controls, I've been hoping that Windwaker will make the cut. Windwaker with Twilight Princess's control scheme would be amazing.

Man, I feel so guilty for supporting rehashes. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't go too overboard with remakes like Capcom. Resident Evil was a good game, but damn, Capcom sure loves squeezing every penny out of it.

It is a game worth rebuying, over and over. But what would be awesomer is to download a patch to add Wii controls and extras and be able to play with the GCN discs. I'm sure its possible.

That's not a bad idea! Although I doubt they'd do that, since Nintendo is a business. They'd get more money if they put it into a brand-spanking new Wii box and sold it to us again.

And seeing they didn't want to pay the extra MP3 licensing fees, I guess they want to milk us for all we're worth.

Hell, if I had the option of making more money I'd take it too. Nintendo would be no different.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVVE Wind Waker. It's art style, it's music, it's slightly different take on the Zelda story, all wrapped up into one GOTY package. How could anyone hate this game? :D
