"The DSi is a great handheld for those willing to make the investment (More details in my review), but there are a few minor shortcomings noticeable in the system's built-in software. It used to be that, when a console shipped with problems like this, it was stuck that way for good. That's no longer the case, though, as the DSi's firmware can be updated much like the Wii's, allowing features to be added and existing software to be tweaked. As of yet, Nintendo hasn't even hinted at an upcoming firmware update for the DSi, but that hasn't stopped me from brainstorming the possibilities. Following are a few ideas I've thought up that would make the DSi that much more great."

I don't have a DSi (I'm quite happy with my DS Lite) so I don't really know the troubles you face on the DSi but what you suggest sounds feasible.

For the pause idea, maybe it could bring up a "Home" menu like on the Wii with basic features - taking pictures, listening to music etc.

And frankly, DSi should have supported MP3 out of the box.

Nintendo doesn't want to pay the licensing fee for MP3s.

That's why they changed the Photo Channel on the Wii, so that it won't play MP3s.

I don't have a DSi but I can surely see that your updates are a good idea. Unfortunately, I always have this feeling that I'm hoping Nintendo will fix things, when I should be expecting them to fix things. Right now, for example, I'm hoping Mario Galaxy 2 will still have orchestrated music. I'm also hoping the next Zelda (well, both of them I guess) will be more challenging. Nintendo's kind of unpredictable that way. I never expected the SD card update to release but it happened. I never expected 2 main Mario games to be announced at E3 but it happened. Surely there shouldn't be too much to worry about.

Yea I know but it makes no sense from a consumer stand-point. All of the songs that I have on my computer are MP3s, and people who use the AAC format probably have an iPod or something.
